Patch 5.1 aka Oh God Everything is Broken

As everyone is aware (or should be aware) Patch 5.1 has hit the live servers and with it, the breaking of many addons, if only temporary. Make sure that before you load up World of Warcraft you check to see if the addons you have are updated and in the addons menu after you log into World of Warcraft check Load out of Date addons. The main thing that we have to be asking ourselves as Monks is what has changed for us?

In case you haven’t seen the changes to Monks the patch notes are here.

Desperate Measures now also resets the cooldown on Expel Harm when the Monk is below 35% health.

The energy costs of Legacy of the Emperor, and Legacy of the White Tiger have been reduced to 20, down from 50.

The energy cost of Healing Sphere has been reduced to 40, down from 60.

The Tiger Power provided by Tiger Palm now reduces target armour by 30% with a single application and no longer stacks.

The healing provided by the Healing Sphere base spell has been increased by 20%.

The healing provided by Chi Burst and Chi Wave has been reduced by 25%.

The healing provided when detonating Zen Sphere has been reduced by 25%.

The Power Strikes talent now grants the Power Strikes effect every 20 seconds, which causes the Monk’s next attack to generate 1 additional Chi.

The Healing Elixirs talent now grants the Healing Elixirs effect every 18 seconds, which causes the next Brew or Tea consumed to heal the Monk for 10% of maximum health.

There is also a change to Ascension that isn’t in the patch notes. The Ascension talent now increases your Energy regeneration by 15%, your Mana by 15% and the amount of Chi you can have to 5.

So what do these changes mean for us?

First of all, our ramp up time is much lower now, as Tiger Power now only has 1 stack, which causes you to ignore 30% of your opponent’s armour, and the Brewmaster buff Power Guard, now only has 1 stack as well, which increases your next Guard absorption by 15%.

With the changes to Ascension it has become a great talent choice and is on par with both Power Strikes and Chi Brew. The change to Power Strikes has made it more useful for Mistweavers, and if we are unable to get to the boss, we can use Crackling Jade Lightning to use the proc.

The healing of Chi Wave, Chi Burst and the detonation of Zen Sphere has been reduced by 25%. All this means is that we will generate less self healing as a Brewmaster or Windwalker.

Healing Elixirs now has an internal cooldown of 18 seconds, which makes it a little worse than it was.

The outcomes of these changes are that Ascension is a definite choice now compared to Power Strikes and Chi Brew, Healing Elixirs got nerfed, but for Brewmasters, it isn’t really a talent that I have considered. We also only have to use Tiger’s Palm once every 20 seconds to keep up Tiger power and only once between Guards to gain Power Guard. Tiger’s Palm still doesn’t cost Chi though, so should be used whenever you have no other ability to use.
