The Stone Guard

The first line of defense against those daring to enter the vaults is a stolid row of enchanted, bestial statues. Hard as granite and ceaseless in their vigil, the sentries of the Stone Guard present an insurmountable wall of flame, fangs, and claws.

 The Stone Guard

That’s right, we are talking about The Stone Guard today, this is the first encounter in the Mogu’shan Vaults. If you have no idea about the fight, please check out some of the encounter guides, as I will be assuming you have a basic knowledge of the fight. Its okay if you haven’t watched a guide for this fight yet, go check out the guides that Fatboss have done up (10 man and 25 man), I’ll be here when you finish.

Watched the guides? Great, let’s get to it.

The first thing that I am going to look at is our talent choices for this fight. The great thing about the Mists of Pandaria talent system is that you can change your talents so easily.

 Stone Guard Talents

These are the talents that I would suggest for this fight. The only really mandatory talents (I feel) are Invoke Xuen, and Dampen Harm. Depending on how you like playing you can switch out any of the other talents. Make sure you really consider each talent in the level 45 tier, with the change to Ascension it provides a very smooth Chi generation, but will provide less Chi overall then Power Strikes or Chi Brew. I prefer Chi Wave over Zen Sphere or Chi Burst during this fight, because it is easy to use, and if it bounces back and forth between you and the boss it provides a great amount of healing.

For Glyphs, I think that Fortifying Brew and Stoneskin are great for this fight, as the majority of the damage that tanks take comes from Rend Flesh (A bleed effect). For the other glyphs it really doesn’t matter which ones you pick.

Now for the tips that I have for this fight;

First of all, you should make sure that your Statue of the Black Ox is out and that you replace it if it dies. You should also try to tank 2 of the 3 (or 4 in 25 man) Stone Guard as often as possible. The reason for this is that because the damage that we need to do increases with our Attack Power, if anything reduces the damage that we do (the 90% damage reduction buff on the single Stone Guard for example), we will provide less Guards to the raid.

Secondly, you should rotate between using Guard and Elusive Brew. Make sure you wait to use your first Guard so that it will be a bigger shield due to Vengeance.

Thirdly, make sure that you use your cooldowns effectively. Fortifying Brew can be used at least 2 times during this fight, maybe even 3, use it when you have 2 Stone Guard on you. Dampen Harm can be used to stop some of the damage from an overload, or to help reduce the damage you take from the Stone Guard.

As my fourth tip, make sure you have as close to a 100% Shuffle uptime as possible, this buff really helps our damage reduction. If you find that you are taking a large amount of damage it could come down to a few possibilities. You either, aren’t using Purifying Brew as often as you should be, your Shuffle buff has a low uptime, your Guard has a low uptime or your Elusive Brew has a low uptime. Remember that Brewmasters are a very active tank; we need to be pushing buttons to get our avoidance and damage mitigation.

As my final tip, Expel Harm should be used on cooldown if you aren’t at 100% health. When you drop below 35% health you should be using it as often as possible.
